Public Lines & Veils

Lines & Veils is a free tool for agreeing what stays out of your game. Everyone marks the same 73 cards, and the deck page lists what the table chose, without names. Nobody needs an account, and you can change your answers at any time. A public deck can't be viewed or answered while you are signed in to Roll Call. Sign out first. Lines and Veils was designed by Ron Edwards (Sex & Sorcery, 2003).

  • Ok is fine to play.
  • Veil can happen in the background, never in an active scene.
  • Line never comes up in our game.

Make a deck

  1. Open Lines & Veils. It is also under Tools in the footer of public pages.
  2. Type a name in Name your deck.
  3. Click Create a deck.
  4. Click Share and send the link to your table.
  5. Click Answer it yourself.

On a touch screen with a share sheet, Share opens it. Otherwise it copies the link and shows "Link copied".

Answering the cards

The questionnaire has 6 boxes, one for each category. Tabs across the top go to any box. A check on a tab means every card in that box has an answer, and the Finish tab is always there.

Each box offers these buttons:

  • Mark all Ok marks every unanswered card in the box Ok. It leaves any Veil or Line you already chose. After you answer some cards, its label counts the cards left, such as "Mark the other 5 Ok".
  • Review cards shows the box's cards one at a time.

Once you have answered a card in a box, Reset this box clears the box's answers. When every card in a box has an answer, Next box replaces Mark all Ok. The last box has no Next box. Click Finish there.

On a card, use the buttons or one of these shortcuts:

ActionKeyboardTouch screen
Ok marks the card Ok1Swipe right
Veil marks it a Veil2Swipe up
Line marks it a Line3Swipe left
Next card goes to the next unanswered cardRight arrowNo swipe
Back goes to the previous cardLeft arrowNo swipe
Undo takes back your last answerCtrl+Z or Cmd+ZNo swipe

On a box, the 1 key does the same as Mark all Ok. A card you leave without answering stays unanswered.

Cards of your own

After the last box, or when you click Finish, you can write up to 5 cards of your own. Click Add another card, write the card, and choose Veil or Line. A card of your own is never Ok. The trash icon, Remove this card, removes one.

Your cards appear on the deck page, and nobody else is asked about them. Anyone with the link can read what you write, and the wording can identify its author.

Submit my answers stays disabled until every card has an answer. If a box is unfinished, the page says "Not finished yet." and names the boxes. Click a name to go back to it. Roll Call stores your answers when you submit. Until then they stay only in this browser tab. You can change your answers at any time. Click Change your answers on the deck page, and the new answers replace the old. This works from the browser you answered in, or with your private link.

The deck page

The deck page shows how many people have answered, then the Lines, then the Veils. A list appears only when it has cards. Each card is listed under the strictest mark anyone gave it. It is a Line if anyone marked it a Line, otherwise a Veil if anyone marked it a Veil. Cards marked only Ok are not listed. Cards people wrote are listed with the rest.

The page never shows who marked a card, or how many people did. The only number on it is how many people have answered. Print prints the page.

Anyone who has the deck's link can open the deck and answer it, so send it only to your table.

If you answered without signing in, the deck page also shows Your link. It shows a private link. Open it on any device or browser while you are signed out of Roll Call to change your answers. Click Copy private link and keep it somewhere safe. Anyone who has it can change your answers, and Roll Call never emails it.

A banner, "Save your private link.", stays on the deck page until you copy the link, from the banner or from Your link. Sharing the deck's link does not count.

Roll Call does not keep the private link itself, so it cannot send it to you again. If you lose it and then answer from a different browser, or after clearing your site data, Roll Call treats you as another person. Your earlier answers stay in the deck.

Limits and deletion

A deck takes answers from up to 200 people. After that, the questionnaire says the deck "already has all the answers it can hold".

Roll Call deletes a deck, and every answer in it, after a year with no visits. Opening the deck page or the questionnaire counts as a visit.

Only the browser that made a deck shows Delete this deck at the bottom of the deck page. It permanently deletes the deck and everyone's answers, after you confirm.
